Famvir is an antiviral prescription medication administered orally. It is used for the treatment and suppression of chronic genital herpes in otherwise healthy patients, and for the treatment of recurrent herpes simplex virus infections (genital herpes and cold sores) in HIV-infected patients and herpes zoster (shingles). Famvir can be taken with or without food. Famvir is normally prescribed for three kinds of treatment. In the case of episodic treatment, an outbreak of genital herpes is treated when it occurs. The recommended dose of Famvir in this case is one 125-mg pill, twice a day, for 5 days. In the case of suppressive treatment, frequent or severe outbreaks are treated by a dose of one 250-mg pill, twice a day, for up to 1 year. The purpose is to suppress the genital herpes virus and help to prevent outbreaks. In the case of patients with HIV and herpes simplex, the dose of Famvir is 500 mg, twice a day, for 7 days. Famvir is the only prescription oral antiviral medication approved for the treatment of genital herpes.
Warnings Precautions
If you have kidney disease, consult your doctor first before taking Famvir. Dosage adjustment or special monitoring may be required during treatment with Famvir. Famvir is in the B Pregnancy Category, meaning that it should be used only when the benefit to the patient clearly outweighs the risk of causing damage to the fetus. If you are allergic to penciclovir (Denavir), do not take Famvir without talking to your doctor first.
Missing a Dose
In case of a missed dose, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule if it is almost time for your next dose. Never take two doses of Famvir at the same time.
Possible Side Effects
If you experience an allergic reaction (difficulty in breathing; throat congestion; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives), discontinue the treatment with Fanvir and seek medical help immediately. If you experience nausea or vomiting, a headache, diarrhea, dizziness, tingling in your hands or feet, or itching, continue the treatment with Famvir and ask your doctor for advice. Other, less serious side effects have also been reported.
Storage
Store between 15C and 30C (59F and 86F). Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
The symptoms of a Famvir overdose are not known but are considered to be similar to those of an acyclovir (Zovirax) overdose. These include: seizures, hallucinations, and kidney damage (reduced urination). In case of a suspected overdose, seek medical help at once.
More Information
Herpes infections are contagious and other people may become infected even while you are undergoing treatment. Wash hands frequently to prevent infection. You should begin the treatment with Famvir as soon as you detect the first symptoms (e.g. tingling, burning, blisters). Even if your condition improves, continue the treatment with Famvir as prescribed. Symptoms may subside before the infection is fully healed. Avoid contact with other people while undergoing treatment. For more detailed information, consult your doctor, pharmacist or health care provider.
