Gris-PEG

Gris-PEG has an effect only with respect to certain kinds of fungal infections. Before beginning the therapy with Gris-PEG, the source of the infection must be clearly determined. Gris-PEG is prescribed for the treatment of the following ringworm infections: Athlete’s foot, Athlete’s foot, (inflammation of the facial hair follicles), Ringworm of the body, Ringworm of the groin and thigh, Ringworm of the nails, Ringworm of the scalp. The recommended daily dose for adults is 330 mg, in a single dose or split over regular intervals. The recommended dose for children is 3.3 mg per pound of body weight daily. In order for Gris-PEG to be effective, the source of the infection must be accurately diagnosed.

Warnings Precautions

In some cases, Gris-PEG may lead to lupus erythematosus (a form of rheumatism). Arthritis, red butterfly rash over the nose and cheeks, tiredness, weakness, sensitivity to sunlight, and skin eruptions are among the most common symptoms of lupus. Should you develop this condition, notify your doctor at once. In case you are undergoing a therapy with Gris-PEG over an extended period of time, you should have regular tests, including periodic monitoring of the kidney and liver function, and blood cell production. Gris-PEG is not effective in terms of prevention of fungal infections. Gris-PEG is known the reduce the effect of oral contraceptives. Additional birth-control methods must be used during treatment with Gris-PEG and women should avoid getting pregnant during the therapy. It is also recommended that men wait at least 6 months after discontinuing the treatment with Gris-PEG before fathering a child. Cases have been reported of Gris-PEG causing sensitivity to light and direct exposure to intense natural or artificial light should be avoided.

Missing a Dose

In case of missing a dose, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule if it is almost time for your next dose. Do not take two doses at the same time in order to make up for the missed dose.

Possible Side Effects

Occasional severe side effects of Gris-PEG are normally caused by extended therapy, high dosage or both. The most common adverse side effects reported during treatment with Gris-PEG involve hypersensitivity. Treatment may result in skin rashes, urticaria, erythema multiform-like drug reactions, and rarely, angioneurotic edema. In such cases, termination of the therapy and countermeasures may be required. In some cases, extended treatment has resulted in paresthesias of the hands and feet. Oral thrush, nausea, vomiting, epigastria distress, diarrhea, headache, fatigue, dizziness, insomnia, mental confusion, and routine activity distortion are among the more rare side effects of Gris-PEG. If the patient develops granulocytopenia, the therapy with Gris-PEG must be terminated.

Storage

Store Gris-PEG tablets at controlled room temperature of between 15?° and 30?°C (59?°-86?°F). Store in tightly-closed containers. Do not expose to light.

Overdose

In case of a suspected Gris-PEG overdose, seek medical help immediately in order to avoid adverse side effects.

More Information

Before combining Gris-PEG with blood-thinning drugs such as Coumadin, Barbiturates such as Phenobarbital, Oral Contraceptives, consult you doctor. Gris-PEG, when taken in combination with other drugs, may enhance, reduce or alter their effect. Gris-PEG may enhance the effect of alcohol resulting in a rapid heartbeat and flushing.
