Prilosec (Omeprazole) is used for the treatment of several stomach and esophagus problems caused by the accumulation of acid such as GERD, ulcers, erosive esophagitis, or Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome. In cases of persistent heartburn that has been treated by diet changes, Prilosec may be the appropriate medication. When Prilosec is used for the treatment of ulcers, certain antibiotics (e.g., amoxicillin, clarithromycin) may be prescribed as well. Prilosec is administered in the form of delayed-release 20mg tablets, taken once daily over a period of 14 days. Prilosec should be taken before meals. Unless otherwise instructed by your doctor, Prilosec should not be taken over a longer period than two weeks. The course should not be repeated more frequently than every 4 months. Swallow the tablets whole. Do not crush, break, or chew the tablets as this will reduce the effect of Prilosec.
