Tramadol is a pain relief medication for moderate to moderately acute pain. Tramadol’s effect is based on reducing the brain’s recognition and response to pain by decreasing the size or magnitude of the pain signal passed from one nerve to another. Post-surgical pain and chronic conditions such as cancer or joint pain may also be treated with Tramadol. In some cases, this medication is prescribed for other uses. For more detailed information, consult your doctor or pharmacist. Tramadol is administered orally in the form of tablets, with or without food. The recommended dosage is one tablet every 4-6 hours. Follow strictly prescription instructions and ask your doctor for clarification on any part of the label that you might not understand. Take Tramadol exactly as directed. Do not take this medication in quantities larger or over a longer period of time than prescribed as you might develop a dependence on Tramadol.
Warnings Precautions
If you have kidney or liver disease, a history of alcohol or drug dependence, consult your doctor before taking Tramadol. Dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment might be required if you have any of the above-listed conditions and in some cases the use of Tramadol might not be recommended at all. People over 75 years of age are more susceptible to the side effects of Tramadol and the maximum daily dosage in such cases has been limited to 300 mg. Tramadol does not have FDA approval for use by children younger than 16 years of age. Tramadol is in the C FDA pregnancy category, meaning that it has a harmful effect on the fetus. It is not known whether Tramadol is passed onto breast milk. If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, do not take Tramadol without consulting your doctor first.
