Valtrex

Valtrex is prescribed for the treatment of herpes zoster (shingles) and cold sores (herpes labialis), as well as for the treatment or suppression of genital herpes in immunocompetent individuals. In some cases, it is used for the suppression of recurrent genital herpes in HIV-infected individuals. Valtrex is administered orally in the form of a tablet.

The recommended dose for shingles is every 8 hours (three times a day) over a period of 7 days. Genital herpes is generally treated by one dose twice a day over a period of 5 days. In the case of patients with cold sores, Valtrex is usually taken for one day only. Valtrex exercises its full effect if administered immediately after the appearance of the first symptoms. Valtrex is to be used in strict accordance with your doctor’s prescription. Do not overdose or take Valtrex more frequently than prescribed. Even if your condition improves, continue the treatment with Valtrex and do not terminate the therapy without consulting your doctor first.

Warnings Precautions

If you have kidney disease or have been diagnosed with immune system problems, inform your doctor before taking Valtrex. Dosage adjustment or special monitoring during the treatment with Valtrex might be required in such cases. If you have ever had an allergic reaction to acyclovir (Zovirax), do not take Valtrex without consulting your doctor. Valtrex is in the B FDA pregnancy, meaning that it does not have a harmful effect on the fetus. It is also not known whether Valtrex is passed onto breast milk. Do not take this medication if you are pregnant, could become pregnant during treatment or are breast-feeding without consulting your doctor first.

Missing a Dose

In case of a missed dose, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Take the next prescribed dose following your regular schedule. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next dose and stick to your normal schedule.

Possible Side Effects

Headaches, nausea, stomach pain, vomiting, and dizziness are among the most common side effects of Valtrex. Before taking Valtrex, inform your doctor if you have ever had kidney problems. Valtrex has been occasionally associated with kidney failure and nervous system problems in some patients. Kidney failure and nervous system problems normally occur in patients who have already been diagnosed with kidney disease or in elderly patients. Nervous system problems include aggressive behavior, unsteady movement, shaky movements, confusion, speech problems, hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that are really not there), seizures, and coma. Inform your doctor immediately if you suffer from nervous system problems during the treatment with Valtrex. Side effects in HIV-infected adults include headache, tiredness, and rash. Such side effects are normally not intense and do not necessitate termination of the treatment. Painful periods in women, joint pain, depression, low blood cell count and random variations in kidney and liver tests are among the more rare side effects of Valtrex.

Storage

Store at temperatures of between 15?° and 25?°C (59?° to 77?°F). Store in a tightly-closed container. Dispose of Valtrex after its expiration date or when no longer used. Keep Valtrex out of reach of children.

Overdose

The exact symptoms of a Valtrex overdose have not been determined but these are expected to be similar to an overdose of acyclovir (Zovirax). These include seizures, hallucinations, and kidney damage (reduced urination). In case of a suspected overdose, seek medical help immediately.

More Information

The use of Valtrex does not prevent the spreading of genital herpes. Avoid sexual intercourse or use condoms in order to prevent transmission.
Herpes infections are contagious and may be passed onto other people even during treatment. Wash hands frequently and avoid contact with other people until the infection is fully cured.
