Viagra

Viagra is used for the treatment of impotence in men. It acts by stimulating the body’s ability to get and maintain an erection during sexual intercourse. Viagra cannot be used as protection against sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV.

Viagra is administered orally in the form of a tablet. It is normally taken about 1 hour before engaging in sexual intercourse but it will still have an effect anywhere between 4 hours and 30 minutes of sexual intercourse. Do not take Viagra more than once a day. Do not overdose or take it more frequently than prescribed by your doctor.

Warnings Precautions

If you have had a heart attack, a stroke, or life-threatening irregular heartbeat within the last six months; have a history of heart failure; coronary artery disease; angina; high or low blood pressure; liver or kidney problems; have ever had blood problems, including sickle cell anemia or leukemia; have a bleeding disorder; a stomach ulcer; retinitis pigmentosa (an inherited eye condition); a physical deformity of the penis such as Peyronie’s disease; a condition that could lead to prolonged and painful erections, such as a tumor of the bone marrow, sickle cell anemia, or leukemia; or are taking another medicine to treat impotence, inform your doctor before taking Viagra. Dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment may be required if you suffer from any of the above-listed conditions and in some cases the use of Viagra might not be recommended at all. Viagra is not recommended for use by women but it belongs to the B FDA pregnancy category, meaning that it does not have a harmful effect on the fetus. It is also not clear whether Viagra is passed onto breast milk. People over 65 years of age are more likely to suffer from the side effects of Viagra and lower dosage may be prescribed in such cases.

Missing a Dose

Since Viagra is only used when necessary, missing a dose is unlikely.

Possible Side Effects

The side effects of Viagra are usually mild to moderate and normally subside within a few hours. Side effects are more likely to occur when higher doses of the drug are administered. Headache, facial flushing and an upset stomach are among the most common side effects of Viagra. Temporary changes in color vision (such as trouble telling the difference between the colours blue and green or detecting a blue tinge to objects), sensitivity to light, or blurred vision are less likely to occur but such cases have been reported. Rare cases of prolonged erection have been reported. In case of an erection which lasts for more than 4 hours, contact your doctor immediately as there may be permanent damage to the penis. Heart attacks, strokes, irregular heartbeats are among the very rare side effects of Viagra. A Viagra overdose may be lethal. In most cases such incidents were related to previous medical history. There is no sufficient evidence that such cases were a direct result of taking Viagra.
