Zyban is used as a supplementary drug in the treatment of patients who wish to quit smoking. Zyban is administered orally in the form of tablets, usually twice daily. It can be taken with or without food.
Swallow Zyban Tablets whole. Do not chew, divide, or crush the tablets.
Warnings Precautions
If you have been treated with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI) in the last 14 days, do not take Zyban. Zyban is in the B FDA pregnancy category, meaning that it is not expected to have a harmful effect on the fetus. The effect of Zyban on nursing infants is unknown. If you are pregnant or intend to become pregnant during treatment, or you are breast-feeding, do not take Zyban without consulting your doctor first.
Missing a Dose
In case of missing a dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not overdose with Zyban. A Zyban overdose may result in seizures.
Possible Side Effects
Dry mouth and troubled sleeping are among the most common side effects of Zyban. Normally, these side effects are mild and generally subside within a few weeks. In case of troubled sleeping, avoid taking Zyban at bedtime. Cases of hypertension (high blood pressure), in some cases severe, have been reported when taking Zyban alone and in combination with nicotine replacement therapy (for example a nicotine patch). Tremors and skin rashes have been the most common cause of interruption of the therapy with Zyban during clinical studies. If you experience an allergic reaction such as a rash, hives, or difficulty breathing, discontinue the treatment with Zyban and consult your doctor. A mild rash might deteriorate into a more severe side effect. If you experience a skin rash, hives, fever, swollen lymph glands, painful sores in the mouth or around the eyes, or swelling of the lips or tongue, notify your doctor immediately. Such symptoms might be the first signs of a serious reaction. In case of other peculiar side effects, ask your doctor for advice. Other side effects may also occur during the treatment with Zyban. For further information on the side effects of Zyban, consult your doctor as not all side effects have been listed in this leaflet.
Storage
Store Zyban at room temperature. Keep Zyban in a tightly closed container. Do not expose to direct sunlight. Keep Zyban out of reach of children.
Overdose
Seizures, hallucinations, loss of consciousness, weakness, rapid heartbeat, and heart attacks are among the symptoms of a Zyban overdose. In case of a suspected overdose, seek medical help at once.
More Information
Limit alcohol consumption during the treatment with Zyban. Alcohol increases the risk of seizures during therapy. If you consume alcohol on a regular basis, consult your doctor before stopping as this may also result in seizures. Discuss alcohol use with your doctor before beginning the therapy with Zyban. Zyban may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Exercise caution while driving or operating heavy machinery and avoid hazardous activities.
